The Bob and Tom radio show arrived on WFBQ-FM (Q95) in Indianapolis in 1983 after an embryonic stint in Petoskey, Michigan and has succeeded beyond most anyone’s wildest expectations. In 1986, the duo released their first of what was to become dozens of albums of musical comedy and comedic skits, entitled The White Album. Bob in particular was a huge Beatles fan, so the album and its follow-up, Shabbey Road, pay tribute. A large number of musical contributors have appeared on Bob and Tom releases, including Duke Tomato, Ricky Rydell, and others, frequently under aliases. The show has spawned other musical comedy acts, including The Electric Amish and Pinkard and Bowden. Each release has been a charity fundraiser, with sponsors underwriting costs and proceeds given to designated charities, released by labels connected to the show or Q95. Frequently, Bob and Tom performed live with their ensemble cast around the Indianapolis area. The radio show went into national syndication in 1995, exposing the duo to a whole new audience. For a time there was a collecting frenzy among the new listeners, driving up prices for their early and scarce releases. Both Shabbey Road and the White Album were released on vinyl; subsequent releases were either on cassette, CD, or both. Bob Kevoian retired in December, 2015, making a few return appearances since. Griswold has continued to anchor the show since Kevoian’s departure. |
