The Corvettes just wanted to have a band and have fun. The early 60’s provided that setting and the music of the day fit the bill perfectly, as songs that begged dancing and socializing reigned. The Corvettes were started in 1962 and de-facto leader Rex Walters kept them going until 1968, when in his words, “The mid-60’s was fun music – just something to dance to. There isn’t any heavy message. And then in 1968 the emphasis started to be on the message…they were getting into drug culture and music wasn’t the primary thing. Music was a by-product and having fun was secondary”. Groups like the Electric Prunes and Iron Butterfly killed the coolness of having a car named band. And Free Reign was born of the disbanding Corvettes. The Corvettes had a nearly permanent gig at Lamey’s Grove in Haubstadt, IN. Waxed two 45’s, one on the Duncan label (Shaftin’ / Janice) and Bee Dee (Century Custom) label (Our love won’t end / tears are free). They managed to have some reunion gigs until 2004. Pretty decent run for a fun-time band! Later as Free Reign, released at least two 45’s and two LPs (one live). |
