The story of the Datura Seeds begins following the demise of Paul Mahern’s prior band, Dandelion Abortion. The Datura Seeds were signed to independent punk label Toxic Shock and released one LP in 1989 and a single in 1991. They also appeared on the 1987 Indianapolis compilation LP Black Brittle Frisbee and the Children of the Corn CD released by Lafayette’s Sonic Iguana label in 1990. Mahern is best known for his long running band The Zero Boys, and he also fronts a Bloomington-based band, *Ask. Mahern has had a long career as a recording engineer and producer. One could make the case that Datura Seeds was a band of recording engineers; Lee Cuthbert has engineering credits on several records, while Quest was a longtime live sound engineer and appears as engineer or producer for several recordings, and played on one Johnny Socko record. Vess Ruhtenberg does not appear on the recordings but was in a live version of the band. Backing vocalist Janas Hoyt is credited as Janas Weaks, her married name at the time, on the album. She was in Red Square, The Mary Janes, and The Vulgar Boatmen. |
