Tyrant’s Reign’s 1987 LP, Year of the Tyrants, is considered a landmark privately released metal album; originals are quite scarce and in demand. A cassette EP, Judge and Jury, was released in 1989. The band has had several lineups with members involved in side project bands; Chris Nelken has been deceased for some time. A version of the band continues to record and manage their archives. The band began in Indiana but soon relocated to Chicago. The Year of the Tyrants LP has been reissued. A self-titled CD on Cynical Gentlemen is a compilation, released in 2004. |

I was fortunate to be Chris Nelson’s guitar tech for a couple years and roadie for the band. I am lucky to have lived through the days of thrash in more ways than one.
Do yourself a favor if you haven’t yet, listen to these pioneers of metal.
