The XL’s were a garage rock band from Terre Haute that were a popular live act regionally, playing in a four state area. They released two 45’s on their own Paro label. Both 45’s are scarce and well regarded. Three of the four sides have appeared on garage compilations, a compliment to the band’s talent; typically only one cut from a garage band gets picked up by compilation producers. The XL’s are featured on the 1992 Indiana garage LP Hoosier Hotshots and Psychedelic States – Indiana, and a few others. Sometimes the band name is shown as Excells, incorrectly. The end of the XL’s most likely was the beginning of Terre Haute band Goliath, with George Egy and Ted Bennett helping found the group in 1969. Egy also played in Terre Haute garage band Kicks. There were lineup changes during XL’s tenure, as reflected in the number of musicians shown above. |
