Amoebas in Chaos was formed from the ashes of two bands, Blind Date and Premature Babies, with each band contributing two members. Red Snerts, the Indiana new wave LP released on Gulcher Records in 1981, included their track “Designer Genes”. Wilkerson was a partner in the Hardly Music label that ultimately issued their sole LP, On To Mayday, along with EP’s by four other bands. The band recorded at Brad Garton and Rick Thomas’s studio Zounds in West Lafayette. The band relocated to Boston (without drummer Bruce Demaree, who chose not to) in August 1981, but broke up the following year, just as the LP was released. They played several live shows in Boston (as well as in Bloomington and Indianapolis) after landing a new drummer, Kevin Cameron, but found it difficult to build a following in the crowded Boston scene, especially with Shipley sidelined from bass due to carpal tunnel issues. Shipley and Lamphear remained in Boston and continued with music, while Wilkerson returned to Bloomington, joining Red Square for a time and later, was a member of Tombstone Valentine. Shipley is a vocalist for Hummingbird Syndicate while Lamphear’s band is Kingdom of Love. | |
