Basooties

Hometown: Valparaiso | |
The Basooties are from Valparaiso, though they are sometimes shown as a Gary band. It was not unusual for young bands to record covers, but it was unusual that the Basooties covered Frank Zappa, not only on their 45 cut “You Didn’t Try To Call Me”, but they also played Zappa material at their frequent live shows in northern Indiana. The Muffin 45 was recorded at Chess Studios in Chicago, reportedly around the time the Rolling Stones were also recording there. Muffin Records was the band’s own label. The A side of the 45 was a Curtis Mayfield composition, “I’m So Proud”. After the 45 the band continued on and were actually signed to Zappa label Bizarre Records, and they recorded further material in Detroit. Unfortunately an album never materialized. The 45 is well regarded; “You Didn’t Try To Call Me” has appeared on a number of garage compilations, including the Psychedelic States – Indiana CD by Gear Fab. |
