Blake Babies formed in 1986 in Boston; Hatfield was attending Berklee music school. However, John Strohm and Freda Love were also at Indiana University in Bloomington, that is the Indiana connection. They were quite successful as an indie band, releasing several albums and singles on Mammoth Records and others, including their own label, Chew Bud. While they broke up in 1992, they have reformed multiple times, releasing music in 2001 and 2016. Julianna Hatfield embarked on a solo career in 1992, while Strohm and Love formed Antenna in Bloomington. In 2003, Love and Hatfield were in Some Girls, in 1998 Love was part of the short lived all-female Bloomington band Lola. After Antenna split, Strohm formed Velo Deluxe in Indiana, and later became a solo act. Hatfield and Love were in a version of The Lemonheads during partsof the 1980’s and 1990’s. Love co-founded Bloomington based Mysteries of Life with Jake Smith, which also included ex-Gizmo and Vulgar Boatmen leader Dale Lawrence, drummer Lon Paul Ellrich, and Kenny Childers. Love has recently performed with the Chicago based Sunshine Boys. |
