The Carol Lou Trio was a long running jazz combo based in Richmond, featuring Carol Lou Hedges on piano and husband John Hedges on bass. Original drummer Harold Jones left to play with Count Basie and has been Tony Bennett’s drummer for many years; he was replaced by Jim Parker. They played live in and around Indiana for many years. The Carol Lou Trio had several releases, including a 1967 LP on Parker Records, which featured Geneta Kern on vocals. Most of the 45’s were released on Juke Records, one of Tommy Wills’ labels, and there is an uncatalogued 45 “Big Noise From Winnetka” that does not appear to have a label name. One of her tunes, “After Hours”, was mistakenly identified as including Lou Reed, creating some confusion among discographers. “TD’s Boogie Woogie” has been included in compilations of early rock. Carol Lou remarried and became Carol Lou Woodward, and continued to perform until 2016, releasing more material on CD. John Hedges died in 2012. Carol Lou was originally from Peru, Indiana. |
