The Dawnbeats were a quintet in Indianapolis that recorded one lone 45 (Drifting / Midnight Express) on the Columbus, IN Amp label. Recording was most likely very late 1959, as it hit the Billboard release list in late Feb 1960. The Dawnbeats played often at the Whiteland Barn as the house band, while appearing at Indpls clubs and bars until 1965. Three members ( Morgan, Bob, and Don) were previously known as the “Downbeats”. At some point (late ’62?) Morgan formed a new “Dawnbeats”. Morgan was the only holdover and the members now included Morgan, Dave Ellman – Larry “Wazoo” Gardner – Larry Lee – and Tony Nasser. This edition may have lasted until early 1965. | |
