The Diplomatics formed in Indianapolis around 1964 as students at Crispus Attucks High School. Originally they called themselves The Diplomats but changed names due to another band of the same name. They are best known for their lone 45, “Hum-Bug Pt 1/Pt 2″ released on the now legendary Lamp Records in 1968. A reissue of the 45 was done in 2003, along with a 12” single version combining both parts on one side with an Amnesty cut on the other side. The band released one other 45 on Knaptown in 1970 but under the name Jazzie Cazzie and the 8 Sounds. They also provided instrumental support for touring acts coming through Indianapolis, such as Joe Tex, Patti LaBelle, and the Dells. Rodney Stepp has had an illustrious career since, having played with The Spinners on nationwide tours and being involved as a producer and musician for several local bands. He also led the 1970’s soul band Rapture, which was quite popular in Indianapolis despite not releasing recordings. He has owned a recording studio, Brooks Street Music, and led a jazz combo, The Stepp-Walker project. The Diplomatics appear on the 2019 Lamp Records compilation released by Now-Again Records. |
