The Five Stars originally formed as The Emeralds in 1956, changing their name to Five Stars because they were advised there were several groups using The Emeralds. The same held true for the name Five Stars, as it turns out. However, this band etched its name into the permanent record by releasing a track “Atom Bomb Baby” that is forever connected to the late 1950’s atomic bomb scares. They released a total of five 45’s, three on local Note Records, with “Atom Bomb Baby” released by Kentucky label Kernel Records, subsequently released by major label Dot Records of Tennessee. Five Stars also backed up a single by Dottie Ferguson, originally released on Kernel and then on Mercury Records. Wes Montgomery appeared on the recordings of “Dreaming” and “Picking Up The Wrong Chicken”, on Note Records that was re-issued by Hunt Records. Five Stars made multiple appearances on “American Bandstand”. | |
