Gary performed at my Linton, Indiana High School Homecoming dance in November, 1960. Also appearing with him was Jerry Baker, a DJ from WBOW in Terre Haute. Baker, from Sullivan, Indiana, went on to announce for the Pacers and, also for the IHSAA. Two very talented Hoosier, that I am proud to say I knew both of them!
Thanks for the cool memory, Fred! When I was in college, I worked at WBOW, when Don Fischer was the sports director before he went to IU; he was my boss. Great guy. And we rebroadcast Pacer games with Jerry Baker, my job was to get them on the air, play local commercials, etc. –Rick
“The Imperials” was a three member ‘garage’ rock group formed in Speedway, Indiana in 1961 by Speedway High School students. Menbers were Bob Sanders (drums) and guitarists John Cadick and Charley Manker. The group primarily played at high school hops, but also played for Saturday evening dance sites such as Westwood Country Club and Melody Skateland. They played on one local area TV dance Show as well.
The members of this group all graduated and went to different colleges. After college, the band members reunited to form “Good Cheer” along with added guitarist and keyboard player Val Muyelle.
Appreciate this great info. Good Cheer had a notable album that is highly sought by collectors.
The Catalinas was a rock band from Speedway, Indiana led by drummer, Ron Schrock. Gil Work was the sax player and also played guitar. Gary Gillespie got his start in this group and later formed Gary Gillespie and the Playboys. The band was very popular on the west side of Indianapolis, but played all over the central Indiana area. They played regularly at the Westlake dance club and several times at the Whiteland Barn.
