The Late Show had its beginnings at North Central High School in Indianapolis, under the name Clayburn. They became the Late Show in the early 1970’s, and released an LP in 1980, Portable Pop, which has consistently been rated one of the top power pop albums of its time. The core members have remained Don Main, Mark Moran and, since the early days, Chris Pyle on drums. The Late Show never actually broke up, according to Main. They performed live until the early 1990’s, taking a break from live performance for about 15 years, and then reforming in 2006. Since then the band has performed regularly, and in 2017 released a new album on Memphis label Trashy Creatures, which also reissued Portable Pop and an archival live album on CD. There were twists and turns after the original release of Portable Pop, as the band operated as Recordio and Rock House for a short time. Mark Cutsinger has had a storied career as one of the key drummers in central Indiana, playing with Zero Boys, United States Three, and many other bands. Current drummer Chris Pyle has had many band credits as well, notably playing drums on Terre Haute based Whole Wheat’s 1977 LP. |
