Sir Winston and the Commons was a very popular and fondly remembered Indianapolis band during the mid to late 1960’s, releasing two singles that were moderately successful, especially “Come Back Again”/”We’re Gonna Love” on the Soma label from Minneapolis. Sir Winston played regularly in the Midwest, including Chicago, and opened for several major acts, including The McCoys, The Beach Boys and The Byrds. They began in 1963 as The Illusions and then, the Suspicions before adopting the Sir Winston name. After the single releases they relocated to Los Angeles, but attrition dropped the band to a trio and they called it quits in 1970. Matelic and Medvescek continued to jam into the 70’s, briefly playing live with the Gandarvas and Please. By 1975 they launched a new band, Anonymous, detailed at the link, which later became J. Rider. The Doorjams, constituted in the mid 2010’s, also include Medvescek, Matelic and J. Rider bassist Greg Reynolds. Ron Matelic recorded several solo tracks in the 1990’s which were released as bonus tracks on the Macchu Pichu label’s CD reissue of J. Rider’s album. Several Sir Winston recordings were reportedly lost to time; two acetates recorded at Jan Eden’s studio were found in the 2000’s leading to releases by Norton Records. Previously, Sundazed Music released a four track EP that collected the two original singles. Sir Winston members can also be found backing contemporaneous singles from Rojay Gotee and International Grapefruite. |
