Sounds Unlimited was really two different bands under one name. The original version played live in Indiana frequently in the mid 1960’s, opening for bands such as The Byrds and Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. The band recorded to fulfill an audition for the upcoming Monkees television show; those recordings remained unreleased until Sundazed issue a 4 song EP in 1996. Original members include Bill Brecht, Steve Foster, Ken Mahlke, Phil Brandt and Wayne Wilson. Meanwhile, an Indianapolis band named Four Score, which included the Talbot Brothers, recorded a new single that was released on Dunwich Records of Chicago under the name Sounds Unlimited, marking the end of the original band. The story of the transformation from the first band to the second is unclear. This band continued in Indianapolis as Sounds Unlimited until 1969, when they changed their name to Mason Proffit and moved to Chicago, releasing several albums during the 1970’s. They became one of many Indiana bands and musicians leaving the state and becoming widely known for their new destination rather than the Hoosier state. Further complicating the Sounds Unlimited story is the many bands that have used that name or a similar one. After Mason Proffit, the Talbot Brothers gravitated towards Christian rock, releasing several albums together and as solo artists. Drummer John Ryan also played with the Quinchords. |
