Baby Huey, born John Thomas Ramey in Richmond, started Baby Huey and the Babysitters, releasing several 45’s from 1965 to 1969 after relocating to Gary. Ramey died in 1970, leading to the posthumous release of the Baby Huey Story LP in 1971 on Curtis Mayfield’s Curtom label. Baby Huey and the Babysitters were a popular live act in the Chicago area during their time. Johnny Ross, also from Indiana, became a band leader, releasing several 45’s. Melvin “Deacon” Jones went on to play with the Impressions, Freddie King and John Lee Hooker. Following the death of Ramey, the Babysitters attempted to continue, briefly employing a young Chaka Khan (pre-Rufus) on vocals. | |
