| Baby Huey, born John Thomas Ramey in Richmond, started Baby Huey and the Babysitters, releasing several 45’s from 1965 to 1969 after relocating to Gary. Ramey died in 1970, leading to the posthumous release of the Baby Huey Story LP in 1971 on Curtis Mayfield’s Curtom label. Baby Huey and the Babysitters were a popular live act in the Chicago area during their time. Johnny Ross, also from Indiana, became a band leader, releasing several 45’s. Melvin “Deacon” Jones went on to play with the Impressions, Freddie King and John Lee Hooker. Following the death of Ramey, the Babysitters attempted to continue, briefly employing a young Chaka Khan (pre-Rufus) on vocals. | |

My husband (of 58 years) and I used to go to Thumbs Up almost every weekend to dance to Baby Huey and the Babysitters. They were the absolute best! Baby Huey’s energy was not to be believed. He was a big guy and was sweating as much as we were, dancing our booties off. The horn section was great too. We have so many great memories of those times. I think it was our love of soul music and Baby Huey that was the ground under us that helped us fall in love. Sweet sweet appreciation for him and them. We are still heartbroken that Baby died such an untimely and tragic death.
