| Hometown: Indianapolis, but born in Tompkinsville, Ky. and moved to Indy as a child with his family. | |
| Bio: Jimmy Coe was one of Indy’s top jazz sax players for decades, a fixture on Indiana Avenue having played in early life with Errol Grandy, and later, with Wes Montgomery, Freddie Hubbard, Slide Hampton, David Baker and many others, including with the nationally recognized doowop group The Students. He was involved with recordings on Indianapolis label Note Records and was the owner of Intro Records, which released some sought after singles in the 1960’s, including his own “Cold Jam for Breakfast” 45. Jimmy was very well known locally, but also played along with major artists, including Aretha Franklin, Roy Hamilton and Gladys Knight and the Pips. He was a member of Tiny Bradshaw’s band and appeared on some of that band’s King Records releases. He is very well remembered as a band leader, side man, and label owner. | |
