The Counts were one of the first doo-wop/early R&B groups from Indianapolis, beginning in 1953 as students at Crispus Attacks High School, where they were originally known as 5 Diamonds. They signed with Dot Records of Tennessee and released several singles on 45 and 78 through 1956, when they were dropped from the label. Though this marked the end of their recording career, the Counts continued to perform in Indianapolis and beyond for decades. Dot released an LP compilation of Counts material towards the end their active time on the label. The Counts are often confused with the Detroit soul band The Fabulous Counts, who changed their name to the Counts in the late 1960’s. Among many other “Counts” groups are another Indianapolis group the Five Dots who recorded on Note Records as The Counts, but are unrelated to the Counts listed here–likely a nefarious tactic by the band’s manager, Mel Herman, who also managed the Five Dots and owned Note Records. Robert Young had a successful career as a songwriter whose songs were recorded by The Ebonys, The Dells, Creme D’ Cocoa and Sanford Clark. |
