Faith Band claims one of the more evolutionary stories of any Indiana band. Beginning in Muncie in the late 1960’s as The Invincibles, and then becoming the Chosen Few, they morphed into Limousine in the early 1970’s, moving to Indianapolis in the process. Mark Cawley, from the upstate NY band Beggar’s Opera which frequently played live in Indiana, joined with the Chosen Few alumni to create the core of what would become the Faith Band, bringing both songs and stylistic jamming to the band. While Limousine was a popular live act, their LP on GSF did not propel them further. Grand Funk Railroad producer Terry Knight picked up the band for his new Brown Bag label and reissued the Limousine LP, remixed and in different track order, billed as “Faith”. An aura of mystery surrounded the promotional strategy as the label tried to build a buzz. With that effort not bearing fruit, the band moved to local upstart Village Records, an offshoot of Sunshine Promotions. Village released two LP’s and then worked out a contract deal with Mercury Records for the band. Two more LP’s were released on Mercury; the band was a popular live act in Indianapolis and regionally during this time. The band’s biggest hit, “Sailin’ Shoes”, was covered by Elton John band member Nigel Olsen and received major airplay. John Cascella later joined John Mellencamp’s band, passing away unexpectedly at 45. Carl Storie and Mark Cawley released an album on Riva Records in 1976 as Blinding Tears. Mark Cawley has written several books on songwriting. Faith Band’s remaining members have reunited at times, releasing a digital album in 2010. |
