Funk, Inc. began in Indianapolis in 1969. In 1971, they were signed to Prestige Records on the strength of a demo tape accompanied by a recommendation from jazz icon Brother Jack McDuff. Prestige issued four LP’s between 1971 and 1976 which were well received. Funk Inc’s primarily instrumental jazz-funk grooves mutated in later albums as vocals were added. Organist Watley restarted the band with Hunt and new members in the mid 1990’s, releasing a new album, Urban Renewal, amid renewed interest in the band via CD reissues. Guitarist Weakley still performs in Indianapolis and has appeared on several recordings, including Billy Wooten’s In This World, billed as “featuring Steve Weakley”. |
