| Obidiah’s Possibles was a local head shop and record store prominent in the 1970’s and 1980’s (possibly into the 1990’s), with at least two locations at the time, one of which was on the southside or in Greenwood.
Today, Obidiah’s brand lives on as a smoke/vape shop, also in two locations, on the south side and west side of the city. |

My husband and I owned Obidiah’s Possibles. We originally opened in 1973 in Eagledale, and eventually had several stores in Indianapolis, and also one in Kokomo and Shelbyville. The stores were hippie department stores. Music, incense, candles, leathergoods, jewelry, t-shirts, used blue jeans, house plants, posters, tapestries, smoking paraphernalia and probably other items I have forgotten. The current Obidiah’s is not affiliated with the original in anyway other than borrowing the name.
My 1st cousin, Dave Crockett, owned Karma Records
My husband still mentions Dave often, even after all these years. He held him up as someone who got things done. I was sorry to see that he had passed away a while back.
I worked at Obidiah’s Possibles in Indianapolis , a fantastic head store at the time , in the late 70’s and Fathers and Suns was the source for records . The store always kept the top 100 billboard albums , top 100 45’s , top 50 jazz albums , and then anything else that was still selling at the time in stock. Karma was their supplier for paraphernalia before they had opened any of the Karma stores. Soon after Karma opened and began selling paraphernalia , I believe they bought from Fathers and Suns as well , you began to see the beginning of the end of mom and pop head stores.
Thanks for your input, Chris! I think that Fathers and Suns was owned and operated by the same people that owned the original Karma chain, though it may have been operated as a separate corporation. As the Karma chain grew, they created their own wholesale operation which also sold to other shops like Obidiah’s Possibles. I worked briefly for Karma on N. Keystone in the late 1970’s and part of their management training protocol was to spend time at Fathers and Suns learning how the wholesale operation worked.
Just purchased a record today with an old Obidiahs sticker on it. Record was pressed at RCA plant in indidnapolis. Is this the obidaihs maybe?
Yes, same. They operated two or three stores in the 70’s and 80’s in Indianapolis. There is still an Obadiah’s on the south side of Indy but last time i checked they were not stocking music, being more of a boutique type shop. Thanks!
