Pure Funk was the first incarnation, beginning in 1969. After some personnel shuffles, the band became Roadmaster in 1974, with the original lineup of Asher Benrubi – Vocals; Rick Benick – Guitar; Toby Myers – Bass; Steve Riley – Drums. Benrubi left after the first album for a radio career, and was replaced former Nebula Spoon vocalist McNally. Further personnel changes were ahead and are detailed at the Wikipedia link. Roadmaster, like Pure Funk before them, was a hugely popular mainstream rock act across Indiana and beyond. On the strength of a demo with Todd Rundgren, they released their first LP on local Village Records in 1976, and went on to release four LP’s plus a live CD and DVD. Village Records was acquired by Mercury Records along the way, which made their LP’s nationally available. The band toured the Midwest with Blue Oyster Cult and Pat Travers, while opening for many major rock acts at shows across the heartland. Members have made their mark following the breakup of the band. Toby Myers played in John Mellencamp’s band for about 15 years, while Myers, Benick and Read have played with Henry Lee Summer while Benick, Read and Summer teamed up with former Faith Band Carl Storie in The Alligator Brothers. Riley played with W.A.S.P. and LA Guns. Although Roadmaster, like Faith Band, never quite broke through nationally, their fans are legion and this band made a major mark on central Indiana. |
